About the SELC-LWML:

The Slovak Evangelical Lutheran Church was organized in 1902 in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, with ten pastors and fifteen congregations. The Slovak Synod was accepted into the Synodical Conference in 1908. In 1959, due to the diminishing use of the Slovak language and identity, the Synod changed its name to the Synod of Evangelical Lutheran Churches. The Synod merged with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in 1971, becoming a non-geographical district, now known as the SELC District.

The SELC District is divided into three zones each meeting once or twice annually along with a biannual convention. Currently there are over 50 SELC District congregations located in the United States and Canada.

Early on our women were active in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League working hard to assist mission congregations as well as their pastors.

In 1987 the LWML-SELC became an official non-geographical district of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League with 2007 marking our 20th anniversary!

The SELC LWML has provided funding for mission congregations in a variety of ways including: signs, altar items, paraments and various mission endeavors.

Each zone and local group provides support for our mission congregations with 25% of our mites going back to the zones for other grants.

The women of the SELC LWML not only endeavor to show everyone the love of Christ but also to “serve the Lord with gladness.”
